Case Study

  • Key Elements

    • A case study has boundaries which can be identified as a 'bounded system'

    • There are multiple types of data that are used

      • Includes almost every type of qualitative data

      • For more in-depth understanding

    • Three types

      • Single-instrumental: researcher first focuses on issue/concern, then selects a bounded case to illustrate that issue/concern

      • Collective/multiple: first researcher focuses on issue/concern, then selects several bounded cases to illustrate that issue or concern

      • Intrinsic: researcher studies case itself without first focusing on an issue/concern

  • Definition

    • Case: an event, problem, process, activity, program, a single person or several people

    • So a case study is the act of studying said event, problem, process, etc. and researching this based on an issue/concern or studying the case in general and going from there

  • Preparation and Methods

    1. Determine if a case study will answer your research

    2. Identify the case/cases and what type of case study will be used

    3. Collect data, analyze data

      • If single-instrumental -> data categorized into themes, analysis of themes

      • If collective/multiple -> create themes from data in each case, within-case analysis

      • Determine common themes between all cases, cross-case analysis

    4. Assertions, when researcher makes interpretations of the meaning of the case data/themes

      • Researcher makes statements about lessons learned from case, what should be learned from meaning of data

  • Case studies would help me to research my inquiry because if I go with how psychologists publish unethical studies, that already gives me a problem/issue I can focus on and I can look at specific research publications that are unethical or 'wrong' and studying these cases can help me figure out why they get published. Case studies can also help me figure out the common themes between these unethical studies and why they still get put through and come out to the public
